Nebivolol is a beta blocker predominantly used to lower high blood pressure. It also sees some use in reducing the frequency and severity of angina, reducing strain on the heart in congestive heart failure, and in some other heart- or circulation-related conditions.

Nebivolol works by slowing the rate at which the heart beats and relaxing blood vessels. This action reduces blood pressure, which in turn reduces the heart's overall workload. It is very commonly used along with other hypertension medications, such as diuretics. It is a long-term treatment and does not replace "rescue" medications, such as nitroglycerin for acute angina episodes.

Getting the Most from Nebivolol

Nebivolol comes in tablets which are typically taken once per day, with or without food according to personal preference. Patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets may crush them and mix them into food. Tablets may be split to acquire half-doses if the tablet is scored; not all generic brands offer scored tablets. The drug may not be evenly distributed in tablets that are not scored, so dosage will not be precise.

The vast majority of patients buy nebivolol to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), though treatment is similar in most other applications as well:

• Patients are usually started on 5 mg per day.
• Effects should be evaluated after 2 weeks of treatment. If results are insufficient, dosage may be increased by 5 mg every 2 weeks until an effective dose is found.
• Dosage should not exceed 40 mg per day.

It takes about 2 weeks for full effects to be felt. Most patients will need at least one dosage adjustment; it's important to attend regular checkups during the start of treatment so the medication's effectiveness can be evaluated and adjustments made accordingly.

Because of the way nebivolol works---slowing heart rate and relaxing blood vessels---any conditions or medications that also produce these effects have potential to cause complications. The medication should be used with caution if there is any history of:

• Chronic breathing ailments, such as asthma or COPD
• Blood circulation problems
• Kidney or liver impairment
• Hyperthyroidism
• Mental or mood disorders

Check with a doctor or pharmacist about the safety of taking nebivolol if also taking:

• Medications that affect heart rhythm
• Calcium channel blockers
• Medications to treat mental or mood disorders
• Medications that affect blood sugar levels

The above medical conditions and medications do not mean nebivolol should not be used, but it may call for lower doses than in other cases.
